We've had multiple people say to us "I have a parent who isn't tech savvy, but that could use encouragement for ..." and talk about a specific issue. Here are some specific recommendations to help.
We know that many people, especially older adults, aren't tech savvy. They engage with technology to stay connected and current, but may only use some of the less complicated features. The following tips are for someone who uses a mobile phone and is comfortable with text messaging, but doesn't want to mess with accounts and settings.
In this case we'd recommend:
- Have a friend or family member be "tech support" for the intended user. They should be able to answer questions about the RxMinder service, help set it up, and take care of making changes to the reminder schedule. For clarity with the rest of the article we'll call this person the "admin", and the "user" will be the one getting the reminders.
- Talk to the intended user and make sure they like the idea. You can show example content in these help pages so they have a good idea of what the experience would be like: http://help.rxminder.co/support/kb/categories/rmkxADQg/content-types.
- Don't proceed if the user isn't interested. We've found that trying to push this solution to someone who doesn't really want it is counter-productive.
- The admin should register with RxMinder using an active and monitored email address they use, but the phone number of the intended user. During registration the email will be verified.
- Bookmark the RxMinder website and save the account credentials with your preferred password management solution. You'll need these over time to log back in to manage the account and make changes to the reminder types and schedule.
- Setup the reminders with the label, content type, time of day, and delivery window for each.
- The user will begin to get the reminders at those times. They need to respond to each with the phrase that is asked for. These phrases change with every reminder to keep them fresher. When the system gets the response, it then sends out the content.
- As an admin, you will get a weekly report with the amount of usage the user is participating in the service.
- Log back in to make changes to time, content type, etc. based on the users preferences.
- Note that after the free trial is over the admin will need to log back into the account and add billing information for the service to continue. This is an excellent time to double-check the user enjoys RxMinder and wants to keep using it.
